Selected by the USAID Global Development Alliance (GDA) as a case study for their Energy sector guide
In 2009, S3IDF was selected by the USAID Global Development Alliance (GDA) as a case study for their Energy sector guide as part of their Building Alliances Series. The guide provides advice on building public-private partnerships and profiles of organizations that make power available to communities that are often poor and unserved or underserved by the grid. In addition, S3IDF completed a second USAID SARI/Energy sponsored study on implementing the Social Merchant Bank model in Nepal which resulted in the potential for an Asian Development Bank project to apply the model in 2010. USAID SARI/Energy has also supported S3IDF’s dissemination activities in Colombo, Sri Lanka and is considering other countries.
Clean Energy Finance Solutions
In 2008, S3IDF received a Top Innovation Award for “Clean Energy Finance Solutions” at the Asia Clean Energy Forum (ACEF); a joint effort of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), USAID, Asia-Pacific Partnership on Clean Development & Climate, Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, and co-sponsors including the Governments of Australia, Japan, Spain and Norway.
World Clean Energy Awards
In 2007, S3IDF won the first ‘World Clean Energy Awards’ in the NGO and Initiatives category for its lighting initiatives in South India. Nomination by the World Watch Institute and selection by a panel of international jurists represents important validation of the Social Merchant Bank model and recognizes S3IDF’s accomplishments in mainstreaming the use of renewable energy technologies. Also in 2007, S3IDF consulted for the Global Village Energy Partnership International (GVEP/I) on an African initiative largely supported by the Government of Russia.
